Overcoming Highway Driving Fear
Comfortable in the city but avoid highways? Highway fear has specific causes — speed, merging and heavy vehicles — and each one is trainable.
Many capable city drivers quietly avoid highways for years. The reasons are specific: higher speeds leave less time to react, merging feels like forcing your way into fast traffic, and large trucks and buses create pressure that city roads never do.
At higher speed, your brain must process information faster and look much further ahead. Drivers trained only for city speeds feel this as loss of control — even when their car handling is perfectly fine.
The skills that remove highway fear are learnable: reading the road far ahead, maintaining safe following distance, timing a merge instead of forcing it, positioning correctly around heavy vehicles, and staying calm at sustained speed.
Exposure must be gradual. A first highway session on a quiet stretch at a moderate speed, with an instructor beside you, teaches your mind that highways are manageable. Each session extends the comfort zone a little further — including night highway driving at the advanced stage.
DWC covers highway preparation in the Reaction DNA level and real highway driving in advanced training — in your own car, so the confidence you build is directly usable the day after training ends.
